Contemporary Quilt Textiles was inspired by Quilt National in the United States, the foremost example of contemporary quiltmaking in the world at that time. The focus was to show innovative and cutting edge quilts here in Sydney, Australia.

The 1992 committee gave Anna Brown and Judy Hooworth permission to investigate the possibilities and prepare a submission to present to art galleries. Michael Pursche, then director of MAGM, responded to the proposal with enthusiasm.

Contemporary Quilt Textiles is the first juried contemporary quilt show to have been shown in an art gallery in Australia. Contemporary Quilt Textilesaims to show quilts that had been created to be artworks to be hung on the wall.

Each exhibition is selected by a panel, including representatives of MAGM, and a juror expert in the field of textiles. Selection is made from digital image submitted by the artists. The panel looks for work that is original and best expresses the current state of the art.

Along with the exhibition there is a lecture program, usually a slide presentation by an esteemed quilt artist.
