February Friday Showcase: Jane Gibson

Profile

Jane has been quilting for over 20 years and her quilts are a mix of traditional and contemporary.  Using strong colours and hand-dyed fabrics, Jane has been a successful exhibitor at various quilt shows.  She loves to make miniatures, quilts with detailed machine-quilting, and quilts using a great deal of Australian imagery.

Jane says she cannot remember learning to sew, it is something she has always done. As an adult she studied a course at TAFE which covered all aspects and she enjoyed them all, especially embroidery. She began quilting in 1983 and since the beginning has had a particular love of  ‘Storm at Sea’ quilts, from the first one she did in shades of green whilst living in America, to a wonderful double helix quilt she made for a Melbourne event in the late 90’s, it is a block she continues to experiment with. Jane has a fascination with experimenting with colour (she is well known for her wonderful hand dyed fabric) and it is one of the first things that hits you when looking at her quilts – they are all so wonderfully colourful.  Jane designs all her quilts often creating new blocks and using principles from Fibonacci to get an interesting play in size & scale.

Jane became a member of The Quilter’s Guild in the early 1990’s very soon becoming a very active member exhibiting in Guild shows since 1993 , she was the Membership Secretary between 1994 & 1997 and has worked in the Guild’s office since it opened firstly at 250 Pitt St and in its current location at 276 Pitt St where she is the Office Manager & Challenge coordinator. Jane was also heavily involved in the ‘Quilts 2000’ project is an active member of Fibre Forum and is currently organising the National Quilt Challenge at the Tom Robertson Festival in April 2006.

For many years Jane has taught, she now particularly enjoys teaching children and there is currently a display of children’s quilts at St Vincent’s Hospital which Jane organised.
