Profile
To see her work you would
not believe Fiona has only been quilting for a short time. She does say
that she learnt to sew as a child with her mother but then her interests
branched into other areas – teaching, aromatherapy, massage therapy and
jewelry to name but a few. Again it was her mother who introduced
her to quilting, after a move to Braidwood and lessons at the local Quilt
shop. With both her mother & sister converts Fiona was persuaded
to visit the Braidwood quilt show in 1998, and as they say … the rest is
history! The quilts on show were nothing like the pastel “grandmothers
flower garden” quilts she had seen in the past, these were bright;
vibrant; exciting and many made by machine she had to go home and make
one. That was seven years ago.
.
Fiona started off working
from books and is mainly self –taught but in 2002 she went to her first
workshop. She is now hooked and goes to as many shows and classes as she
can. All Fiona’s early quilts were trial and error as she worked her way
through different ideas and techniques, wanting to try everything she had
seen or read. This means that each of her quilts are very different from
each other, they are however all vibrant in colour and beautifully sewn.
With her background in jewellery making & design Fiona’s quilts are
moving towards more embellishment with surface additions and different
fabric textures.
Towards the end of the year
Fiona is planning to start teaching her own quilting classes and
we look forward to seeing what classes she proposes. I plan to be one of
the first to sign up.
